TROUBLE: Trevor Andrew rolls into Banff, Alberta, Canada
If you’re a snowboarder you probably know who Trevor Andrew is. His snowboard career in the contest circuit, namely the Olympics gained him world exposure. Then his accomplishments in film and backcountry riding have made him a house hold name. This all matched with his unique style has made him famous. This night however would have nothing to do with that. The people of Banff, Alberta, were about to get a first hand taste of what Trevor Andrew’s music was about and the TROUBLE that comes with it.
When I heard that Trevor Andrew’s band TROUBLE would be playing their first gig in the famous ski and snowboard town of Banff it immediately caught my attention. All staged to take place at the HOODOO night club in downtown Banff would make this a show not to be missed. At first I thought that since it was a heavy snowboard culture town that everyone would attend just on the fact that he was “Trevor Andrew” but it was the exact opposite. A huge amount of transplant Nova Scotians were in the crowd that night (where Trevor originally hails from in East Coast-CANADA). This mixed with locals and what seemed to be a lot of out of town woman made for a mixed crowd.
The band marched in through the hoards of people and took the stage. A small rope that separated the crowd from the stage was immediately taken down on Trevor’s request to the attendees. The band started into their first song and girls came right out of the wood work, frothing and dancing all over the stage. The music is catchy, upbeat and easy on the ears.
Some technical problems arose with the sound which I’m sure had to do with all the people bumping and jumping on stage. This didn’t upset the flow of the show at all. The bands bass player Masa seemed cool as ice all through out the show. The drummer Ian Longwell kept perfect time while keeping the crowd quenched with some JD on the side.
Solid beats and sweet guitar riffs by stand in musician JOFO made this music a definite sound all its own. The band has played all over the world already with venues in Las Vegas, New York and Japan. I talked with the band a bit and got the lowdown on the tunes etc…..
Music and performing onstage was one of the farthest things from Trevor’s mind but in 2004 things changed with a blown knee that had him dealing with some downtime. He put his energy into writing music between living in Brooklyn, NYC and Squamish, BC. As 2005 came around he had tracks written and was doing shows in New York. The TROUBLE has been rolling ever since.
The band is on tour right now and has some big shows lined up with possibly playing at the X-Games and in Japan but you can be sure they’ll be rocking out just as hard at small spots like this one in Banff, Alberta, Canada.
