Tilly and the Wall
Ben Fee
On Monday July 10, Tilly And The Wall tapped their way into the hearts of an audience at the Doug Fir in Portland, Oregon.
The 5-piece took to the stage some time after 11— following Jason Anderson and Now, it’s Overhead¬—with the soon-to-be anthem “Sing Songs Along.” The song’s infectiously upbeat chorus set the tone for the remainder of the show, which dipped in between tracks from their two albums, each of which could be bittersweet soundtracks to an innocent love affair with life.
If you haven’t familiarized yourself with this music, you must. It is relevant, important, and enhappying. Most of their songs are performed with, instead of drums, percussion through tap dancing. It’s such an elaborate and amazing show to behold. You can’t help but shake your bum bum and exercise your smile glands.
Some of snowboarding’s more influential members were in attendance: The Huffman twins, Alexis “Rolexi” Waite, Spencer O’Brien, Jen Sherowski, Annie Fast, and TJ Schneider. There were numerous times throughout the performance when I wished I could have laser-transported all the people I know in the whole universe there and explained, “Listen and watch. This is great. This is what people should be doing…”
After the final chord was strummed, we did what any group of rational sugar-happy humans would do in portland: head to VooDoo Donuts for an encore's encore of tastiness. Members of Tilly, and members of the boarders chomped and passed around a potpourri of donuts until our bellies, quite literally, hit a wall.
You may ask Mr. Internet about them as well.
