Ms. Superpark: Day 1

Mammoth Mountain is infested with some of the best women’s snowboarders in the world, and today, Ms. Superpark 3 commenced, leaving the onlookers breathless, and the riding was pretty amazing too.

Oren Tanzer and the UnBound Park Staff built an amazing course, consisting of a monster channel gap with Zaugged quarterpipe sides. That feature throws you, at Mach 3, towards a humongous double-sided hip approximately 25 feet tall, followed by a 22 foot quarterpipe at the bottom, which may quite possibly be one of the best built features in the history of human kind. The gnarliest feature is a 40 foot step-up gap jump over a wooden fence with metal posts. It was the host of one of the gnarliest crashes we have ever witnessed today, as an unnamed male rider/dance floor assassin came up short, breaking the fence with his back and cartwheeling down a pile of rocks and dirt. Yeah, it was GNARLY, but we hear that he’s okay.

The women took to the course at about noon, hitting the features to check their speed and get a feel for the course. The riding was mellow today, but I saw some back 5’s over the channel, some serious hip action on both sides, and the largest female quarterpipe handplant session ever. Riders in attendance were, but are not limited to: Elena Hight, Silvia Mittermuller, Leanne Pelosi, hana Beaman, Desiree Melancon, Marie-France_Roy, Sara Phillips, Vera Janssen, Tara Dakides and many other perfect 10’s that are sure to spin some serious 9’s this week.
