Superpark 10: Day 1—The Warm-Up
By Joe Prebich
The first day of Superpark 10 started off like every snowboarder’s dream. Blue skies, mild winds and a park like no other. As the rider’s flooded into the registration building, the hyped increased about what exactly was up “there” and what really was about to go down. As Superpark veterans mingled with the up and coming rookies, the vibe was not one of competition, but of progression.
As the session started around the mid-morning, everyone took their time lapping through the park and checking out the features. The run started with the Big Bear cheese wedges up at the top that rolled you into the Keystone feature which was a gnarly step-up that only a few riders had enough speed to tackle today. After the step-up came the Boreal Mountain channel gap, which stayed mainly untested except for a few lucky speed-carrying individuals.
Riders were hyped on the day as the sun baked the faces of the unprepared and photogs click slides or pixels and flimers spun foot after foot of tape, the day went down as one of the best Superpark openings in history. And it was an international affair with Italians, Chileans, Canadians, French Canadians and more mingling with Americans. Our diplomats should take some tips for us on the way to really handle international relations.
Although the day was spent warming up to the features, Big Bear’s gigantic cheese wedges were sessioned hard all day as well as the Stop Sign Jib, which was a crazy feature which Shane Flood destroyed with his backside inverts and handplants on.
The line up was heavy today with riders like Kass, Lago, Flood, Hardingham, Craven, Milbery, Vito and the list goes on and on and if this is what these guys consider a warm-up session, then we are in for some serious action in the upcoming days!
