Chickens from all over the world descended upon Mammoth Mountain this past weekend, not in a creepy Alfred Hitchcock kind of way, but to try and take home some big checks at the 2009 Roxy Chicken Jam.

The ladies showed up early in the week to test out the pipe and slopestyle course, giving the park staff the time and feedback needed to work out the kinks and get things dialed, which came in handy because as it turns out, freshly painted wall rides don’t ride too well.

Saturday things got serious in the supertube, with a stacked lineup of women ready to go huge. Mammoth regs Molly Aguirre and Mercedes Nicoll desperately tried to defend their home turf, a daunting task to say the least. Kelly Clark was going large as usual, and put down two clean 720s in her winning run, earning herself a quick fifteen large. Canadians rounded out the rest of the podium, with Mercedes Nicoll linking up several spins for silver and Sarah Conrad, who is lucky enough to ride for McDonald’s, took home a supersize check for third place.

While they were the headliners, the women weren’t the only ones in the halfpipe. Roxy also held a mascot contest in the pipe and the crowd was treated to tricks from bananas, couches, fish, apes and more. These weren’t just costumes either, they were full on mascots with oversized heads and very limited visibility to say the least. All this monkeying around led into the Quiksilver Cluck Off, a 45 minute jam between a handful of Mammoth locs that ended with a changing of the guard as Greg Bretz reached deep into the bag of tricks and stomped a 1080 to overcome Tommy Czeschin as time was running out.

Roxy went all out all night too, putting on a show in the Mammoth Village featuring Santogold and Cold War Kids, leading up to a VIP afterparty. The sun must have been out late partying with everyone that night, because he didn’t show up on Sunday morning, delaying slopestyle finals to Monday.

The clouds and wind gave way to a typical warm and sunny Mammoth day, and the girls took full advantage of the clear skies. Even during qualifiers it became apparent that airtime would be in no short supply. Leanne Pelosi was getting tech on the down box, with 270 front boards and young Raewyn Reid was also dismantling the jib section of the course with 180 to switch fifty 180 out. Former Roxy Chicken Jam champ Tara Dakides and friend Cheryl Mass were launching massive 270s on the hip, and things didn’t slow for the dozen dimes in the finals. Chanelle Sladics and Silvia Mittermuller landed 720s in their runs, but came up just short of the podium. Norway’s Lisa Wiik put together back fives and sevens on her way to third place. England’s Jenny Jones took home second place with huge hip airs and a front seven. Janna Meyen proved to be the chicken to beat and rounded out the United Nations-like podium after gapping to 50 50 on the flat down rail and stomping back five, cab seven and cab five.

The ladies are heading north to June Mountain for Ms. Superpark this week, so keep checking back to www.snowboardermag.com for all the updates from that action.
