Rome No Correct Way Premiere
Words: Tom Monterosso
The screen came to life in the cramped sauna of a club and in turn, so did the audience. Marius Otterstad opened the film with big lines, backcountry booters and an awe-inspiring array of board trickery. Marius has been a staple on the Rome scene for years, and he came out once again, with a bang, cementing his place in snowboarding with the out-of-bounds elite. As expected, SNOWBOARDER’s 2008 Jibber of the Year Laurent Nicolas-Paquin (LNP) had another banger part, tearing through the streets and single-handedly evolving rail riding for the second year in a row. To be honest, some of the shit LNP stomped, I can’t really even begin to describe. Just know that if you get a rise out of rail riding, LNP’s part is the one to watch this year. Jesse Fox handled some shit in the Whistler backcountry, capping off his part with one of the better tricks of the film, while newcomers John Foy and Greg Bokenkamp shared a great section in their debut on camera. Can’t wait to see what they come out with in the coming years.
SNOWBOARDER’s Women’s Rider of the Year, Marie France-Roy killed it last winter, and yet again, she’s poised to hoist the Rider of the Year trophy above her pretty little head yet again. The chick is taking women’s riding to a new level, so check her part. Other standout parts included the legend Bjorn Leines, who took it to everything last winter, per usual, French Canadian jib juggernauts Max Legend and Yan Dofin, who, though known more for their metal-meddling in the winter months, had a good portion of backcountry jumping in their offering.
With little montage sections in-between, the Rome crew mixed up the monotony of trick-after-trick, part-after-part, breaking it up into digestible segments and making the film that much more fun to watch, and then the hammer dropped. Icelandic sensation Eiki Helgason came over to the States this past winter with very little filming experience under his belt, but you wouldn’t know it. This kid is the next big thing; mark my words. Tying down the ender in the movie this year, expect to be blown away by this kid. Backcountry jumps galor (of which he had never hit until this winter), progressive jibbing and a unique style all his own, Eiki is here to stay. You may have seen him on the cover of our Photo Annual last year, and though I can’t give away too much from his part cause I feel it would be an injustice to not let you see it for yourself, expect much more coverage of this dude. All in all, the film was no less than excellent, and the Rome dudes should give themselves a pat on the back, cause once again, they produced one of the best movies of the year.
