ROAD TO TAOS DAY 2: Firecrotch goes to Angelfire, New Mexico
Day two started slow. The night prior, Jen, Rachel and Maya from Ballantine’s PR (an outsourced PR firm representing the New Mexico Tourism Board) took us to Maria’s, a fine Mexican establishment and very well known to Santa Fe locals. Filling our guts with carne asada and tequila, we hit the sack early, and woke up at six in the morning to get a head start on our 2 hour trek to Angelfire.
Merely coincidental I’m sure, my nickname in high school was the “Angel of Fire,” due to my red and stupidly curly hair, so it was only fitting that our second stop on our New Mexico tour was Angelfire Resort. We got to the mountain around 10 and met up with Christy Germscheid, the PR Manager for Angelfire. Right off the bat, we were handed VIP passes to the mountain, and provided with Brian Palmer, a ski patroller at Angelfire and our guide for the day. It was first-class treatment, and I can only attribute these kind acts to the simple idea that someone had tipped them off to my pre-college moniker.
The temperatures were in the single digits, but that didn’t deter me and Transworld Snowboarding editor Kurt Hoy from getting double-shredded. We were toured around the mountain all day by Brian, as we lapped the park, tracked the trees, and even got a snowmobile tow out into Angelfire’s hike access-only terrain, courtesy of the Angelfire Ski Patrol. There, we were treated to a healthy dose of pow, my first of the season as well, so Kurt and I were pumped on the effort all these people put into showing us around.
Towards the end of the day, our legs burned and it was time to head back to the hotel, and here I am, typing away like a drunken chimp sitting behind a piano. I would like to personally thank Walt, Brian, Mike and Colin who bear Angelfire’s Iron Cross and keep the general public healthy, and furthermore, Christy for going completely out of her way in all aspects simply to please a nerdy snowboard journalist who she hopes will write nice things about her resort. Well rest easy Christy. Angelfire lived up to all of my expectations, and then some. I seriously recommend checking this place out. It truly is a diamond in the rough.
