While up and coming shreds across the lower 48 were cutting there teeth on icy pipes and rusty rails Canadian snowboarding prodigy Mikey Rencz was already retired to the pow. Having moved to Whistler from Alberta in his early teens Mikey Rencz was putting tricks down in the Brandywine backcountry with the Wildcats by the time he was 16. Now that he is 21 he is a veteran of the video part process. Mikey took time off from getting taller to visit the SNOWBOARDER Magazine office and get querried.

PB: How do you pronounce your first name?
MR: Mikey.

Can you spell it?

There’s no “C” in there?
No. The frenchies sometimes try to slip it in though.

The frenchies I know are always trying to slip it in. What’s the difference between the snowboarding scenes in Alberta and in British Columbia?
There are way more people trying to film and do all that in British Columbia. In Alberta more people are shredding just for fun. There are also more people filming themselves in Alberta and keeping a tight knit crew.

How long have you lived in Whistler, British Columbia?
For the last eight winters.

Where in Whistler did you live specifically?
I lived in Creekside or Eight Mile.

Isn’t it weird to call someplace eight mile when you live in a country that uses the metric system?
I never thought of that. We just called it “8 Mile” because it was very “trailer-esque.”

So now you are moving away from Whistler.
Yup, going to Squamish. I am pretty excited. Eero Niemela and Benji Ritchie are going to live there.

Is that going to be a big change for you? It is a whole new postal code.
I don’t think it will be a huge change because I already spend a lot of time there.

So why do you have to leave Whistler? What happened?
I wanted to move into my house in Squamish because I have had it for a while. It will be nice to be able to clean our clothes too.

Do you plan on making any trips back up to Whistler next winter?
Oh yeah but maincamp in Squamish.

Mancamp?
No maincamp.

What new movies are you looking forward to checking out?
I really want to see The Rome Team Video Any Means and The Absinthe movie Optimistic? because they spend a lot of time in BC and other places people don’t normally go.

The Absinthe crew went back in time to BC to film!
No they went to British Columbia but that would be pretty cool if they went back in time. I am stoked to check out all the videos.

When you are done watching the videos are you going to see any dvds?
Tons. I got a vhs player though.
