Meghann O'Brien: INTERVIEW
Ben Fee
After Ms. Superpark III, Meghann O’Brien journeyed from Mammoth to vacation for a few days and visit some friends in southern California. She was staying over for a small handful of fortnights, went to San Diego for a couple days, and then unexpectedly popped back up for more visiting. Every day when Meghann is supposed to be someplace, like Oregon, for example, she decides she will be someplace else instead; like LA, or San Diego, or the offices of SNOWBOARDER magazine. She sat with us for lunch one day, and let us into her one of a kind mind. We found that she is a funny thing who bounces and lands where she pleases, and thank goodness for her health, she lands more than she bounces on the snow.
Interview: Meghann O’Brien
BF: What did you have for lunch today Meghann?
MO: An apple, some blueberries and two Bio-K yogurts.
Did that lunch fill you up?
No, but it made me feel good, I believe.
What do you think of cookies?
Uh, I don’t like them.
In your eyes, what are they (cookies) like?
I dunno, they’re just kinda gross. I don’t find them very good.
What do you like instead?
I like things that grow, I guess. I think they’re more interesting. Or unless you have a really good time making cookies with friends or something. That’s kinda cool.
Well, cookies grow from stuff, like flower and love.
(Laughs). Yeah, I know. But stuff that comes from sh*tty places really sucks.
What do you think of food in general?
I think most of the food out there is really disgusting. It’s really gross, the food that most of us eat.
How come?
Because it just seems really far removed from anything that we’ve eaten before.
Do you think that cave people were smart?
I dunno.
So you’re “of” Brian O’Brien?
Yeah. (Laughs). People get a kick out of that.
Does your dad shred?
Yeah he does. A lot. More than anybody I know or have ever known.
Has he been snowboarding longer than you?
No. I started first, and then he started after me, and then my sister Spencer (O’brien) started.
Oh. Spencer’s your sister? She’s a snowboarder...
Yeah that’s right. I’m Spencer’s sister (Laughs).
We haven’t really talked about snowboarding. You’re a snowboarder, right?
Yeah.
Cool. Do you grab your board?
Yeah, I guess so.
All the time?
Most times.
What about when you’re riding a chairlift?
Sometimes I grab the tail if my foot is getting sore. You know, like you reach behind (demonstrates) and grab it, like that. Yeah, like that.
That’s good.
I like taking my board off on the chairlift though. A friend of mine in Whistler started doing it, and putting it back on at the top, and I have this really good method of resting it against my foot. It’s nice when you’re on the chairlift by yourself cause you can stretch out. This is sort of a new thing.
Anything else you wanna drop?
No, I don’t think so.
Well then, thank you Meghann.
Yeah. You’re welcome.
