Danny Kass: WEB INTERVIEW
Tom Monterosso
Danny Kass epitomizes what snowboarding could and should be. After all of the rumors regarding some of his sponsor changes, television shows and the alleged sale of Grenade Gloves, we sat down with Danny for a few quick questions to help clear the air. Read on as Danny dishes the dirt on why he skipped the US Open, what companies are backing his moves and wet dreams about Oprah Winfrey.
Can you give us a quick overview of your season this year? Who were you filming, riding and getting radical with? And, speaking of radical, the Dingo recently informed us of your exclusive club. Care to elaborate?
We have started a Radical Dude Club. You have to get a tattoo of the brand on your body to be in and if you send a picture of your tattoo to Radical Dude Club PO Box 8549 Mammoth Lakes CA you will win free gloves, stickers and picture on our website (www.grenadegloves.com).
How is the TV show going? Are you down with Oprah now?
I filmed a show with Dingo along with the Grenade Strikes Back contest series, so look for it on a tube near you starting in December. It was an amazing journey and we found some great kids and had some great times. I did have a wet dream about Oprah, but I haven’t met her.
Why the absence from the US Open this year?
I was filming with Travis Rice in Jackson Hole Wyoming for his upcoming epic hit. I was beat from shoveling and my dog was run over by a car so I had to care of him.
How’s Big Vern holding up? I saw him at Mammoth and he looked to be doing better...
He is doing better. He broke his leg and recently had 6 pins and a metal rod removed from his leg, so now he walks around with a limp. It is going to get better but I think he will always walk like a blood. He has been shooting tons of ads and is hoping to seal a food deal.
There’s been a lot of speculation regarding your recent addition to Oakley, and now, your move from Vans to Nike. What’s the story behind your sponsor changes?
Yeah some new sh*t is going down. I decided to join the Oakley team this winter. I was pumped up, cause I have always respected their brand, technology, and the people that work there. Hope ully in two years they can release an mp3 goggle. The Nike SB program is going off and maybe I will be a part of it. (Its) too early to tell, but they have some big plans and stock technology that will blow your mind.
There has also been some talk of Grenade being sold. True or false?
This is FALSE. Grenade was approached by another brand, Section/Technine, but after careful consideration, we declined the offer to relinquish ownership or control. We at Grenade love what we do and why we do it. Its for snowboarding and the youth.
Are you in it with Grenade for the long haul, or do you see yourself separating from the company eventually?
I am in it for the long haul. Its in my blood. Its been an amazing experience going from making stickers, to importing and exporting goods, designing clothes, events, parties, and other crazy products. I am actively involved in the design and enjoy making new products every year.
Do you think you’ll try to make the 2010 Olympic team?
If I am still alive, I will be riding pipe.
What was the funniest thing that happened to you this winter?
The funniest thing to happen to me this winter would have to be traveling around the world with Lando. Definitely the Castle Grayskull footage. Check Standard’s Catch The Vapors.
What was the funniest thing that happened to Sketchy D this winter?
He dyed his beard to look like a wrestler and now its been three months and he still looks like a Hulgan.
Thanks for the update Danny. Stay radical.
