World Superpipe Championship Finals
Well, I showed up at least fifteen minutes late, ah, I crawled under a fence - that way security couldn't see me, heh heh, and, uh, after that I just sorta spaced out for about an hour.
Da-uh? Space out?
Yeah, I just stared at the pipe; but it looks like I'm working. I did that for probably another hour after lunch, too.
I'd say in a given week I probably only do about fifteen minutes of real, actual, work, and this week that fifteen minutes was spent atop the Eagle Superpipe at Park City for the 2008 World Superpipe Championships, a five-star TTR sanctioned event. The WSC is an invite only ski/snowboard contest, there are no qualifiers to be had, if you're in, you're in and that's that. As anticipated the weather did not maintain its pattern of 40-degree sunny days as a system moved in and light flurries fell consistently throughout the day under gloomy grey skies; but there was still a showdown to be had.
So I posted up on the side of the pipe with Grenade's "filmer" (filmer is not a real word) Silent Greg Wheeler who was taking the day off from The Boned Age, and Hana Beaman, recovering from an injury at the X Games, was shooting her Fisheye and guest managing the Roxy snow team or something. Mason Aguirre, Peetu Pirranen, Louie Vito, and of course Shaun all rode really well. We saw back to back 7's from Ellery Hollingsworth and Torah Bright, Kelly Clark was boosting, there were back to back 10's from at least half of the dudes, and best of all we were witness too the switch double wildcat at the bottom of the pipe by none other than Luke "switch double wildcat" Mitrani himself.
The level of riding at the WSC was great but the contest ran really slow which took away from the excitement. The snowboarding portion of the contest was over around 1:00 pm and lucky for us there was complimentary food and bad boy sodas in the rider tent. We got some sort of snus from Kjersti Buass that is made specifically for babes, and Kjersti also informed us that March 8 is International Women's Day (IWD) which is just great, so we are going to make sure we are giving lots of attention and compliments to all the lovely ladies at the WSC after-party later tonight!
In conclusion everything was the same again at the WSC, last year's defending champs, Shaun White and Torah Bright both reclaimed their titles and left the hill a collective $30,000 richer.
