The Launch: Day 3
Ahhhhh, sunny skies and the opportunities they afford can be appreciated by all: the riders, the photographers and of course, you, the reader. Day three of Nike 6.0 and SNOWBOARDER Magazine’s collaborative effort, THE LAUNCH was the day that we were all waiting for. 60 degrees, zero wind and not a cloud in sight.
The morning session on the jump was the highlight of the day for this red-headed writer, as the SPT crew dialed the jump to perfection the night before and the kids were stoked to grab, twist and radical their snowboard maneuvers off the ramp. Greg Bretz came out strong, which was no surprise as he has been a standout all week long. New comers Wes Walsh and Nick Doucette sessioned well. Dylan Alito is one of the weirdest teenagers I have ever met, and coincidentally, one of the best snowboarders as well. Let’s see here...... other standouts on the jump were Trevor Jacob, Ben Watts, Bryan Shuey, the brothers Dawoud and Warnick, Bryn Valaika (who ended up hurting her knee. Get well soon Bryn), Austen Sweetin, Daniel Brown, Tucker Andrews, Johnny Lazzareschi, Kyle Mac, Zeppelin Zeerip, Colin Tucker, Ross Baker, Ben Ferguson, jeez.... You get the point, and if you don’t here is the point.
**POINT** These kids are good at snowboarding. **POINT end**
Ross Baker showed everyone in attendance how to backside seven over an entire hip, which no one could really relate to, but they could most definitely clap their hands to. Baker is no joke; the kid kills it.
The afternoon session took the riders to the top of the park to session some down-flat-downs, lexan automobiles with Nike logos, tree rides and up-down boxes. The real action went down on the tree as new Nike team pro Louie Vito stepped to the bark and inverted himself in the frontside fashion about 5 feet up. The place went crazy, and the riders followed suit with Bretz, Zeerip, Ryan Frier and a smattering of others bonking Mother Nature’s gift. At around 4 o’clock, the kids were tired and so were we, so we called it. Looking back at my photos, it seems that day three was the most productive, so have a looksie, but not too much, as these are just a few shots from the event. To see the whole kit-and-kaboodle, pick up the issue when it hits newsstands and then wait about 10 years, call my office phone and tell me how awesome we are, cause these kids are the new face of snowboarding. Take our word for it.
