Fresh and Tracked with Benji Ritchie
When he’s not getting airborne in the Brandywine backcountry or taking his show on the road, Rossignol, Billabong, and Thirty-Two athlete Benji Ritchie can be found tormenting the teetotalers around Whistler with lush-come-lately Dickie Pricklesteen. This debaucherous duo spent the winter of ’07 breaking hearts and bottles all the way from Mont Saint-Sauveur, Quebec to the interior of BC. When the dust and rashes cleared, the Shakedown had been shaken up, the stoke was put back in Revelstoke, and the Whiteout cameras had captured more than a few blackouts!
WHAT’S HOT & WHAT’S NOT IN SNOWBOARDING Fresh Fresh white kicks: I never get enough of these; love them. Ride pow in the morning, play golf in the afternoon: My favorite spring days in Whistler. Surf trips: The thing I miss the most during a long winter on the snow. Starbuck’s coffee: I’m not a big coffee drinker, but Starbuck’s never gets old.
Montréal: I just love that city. The restaurants, the nightlife, the girls... It’s really something else. Entourage: The most played TV show in my DVD player, by far. In-N-Out burger: Good thing I don’t live in California, because I love that crap. FIFA 2007: We have many, many, down days in Whistler, so my roommate Reno and I have numerous soccer-game battles. It’s so sick. We gamble a lot of stuff over that game. My laptop: I could not imagine myself living without my computer, especially when I travel and spend a lot of time in airports. Skype: Another thing on my computer that saves me a lot of money. You can call people anywhere in the world from your computer when you have an Internet signal, for something ridiculous, like one cent a minute.
Tracked: Airline people: I don’t know what’s up with most of these people, but they are so frustrating and they treat me like sh*t. It doesn’t matter if I have the gold travel card; they really make me feel like I don’t belong in the first-class lineup. Icy park jumps: I stay away from those, but sometimes I still get pressured to hit those sh*tty jumps for a catalog shoot. Hate that... Filming in the Whistler backcountry: Some days, it is just a race to try and get to some zones before it gets too crowded.
Four roommates: That’s way too many people for the house that I live in. Love them all, but the hydro bills and the stinky snowboard boots smell are too much! Doubling up: It’s already so demanding getting up there myself, so if you don’t have a sled, don’t bother asking me. Paying rent: I feel like I have been doing it for way too long. I need my own place soon. Driving across Canada: Fifty hours, that is... Done it about a dozen times now; it’s long and unhealthy... It sucks that I like Québec so much! The Montréal Canadiens not making the playoffs: They killed it back in the day... I want to see my team win the Stanley cup sometime soon, so I can stop pretending that I like the Vancouver Canucks when I am in Whistler! Getting your computer stolen: It happened to me last year at A.S.R. in San Diego. I didn’t save any of my photos from all the trips I did over three years… Worst feeling ever. Bar tabs: They add up dangerously when you’re having too much fun!
