Bonfire's 11th Annual Pipe 2 Pipe
The sun shown down bright and hot at Timberline and at Windell’s ski/snow/skate camp for Bonfire’s 11th annual Pipe 2 Pipe snowboard/skateboard contest that was held this Saturday. The contest has an open division which consisted mostly of campers, as well as a select invite division which included but wasn’t limited to the likes of the Oregon OG transplant from ATL—Ahmon Stamps, as well as Colin Langlois, Lucas Magoon, Chris Grenier, and a slew of other well equipped shredders.
Things got started with a rail jam on hill around 11:00 or so. As you can imagine if you’ve been to a rail jam ever, combos and technical trickery was aplenty, with heavy hardways like front three 50-50’s by Austin Granger—he taco’d a few times but I think he got it, and then properly executed basic tricks like all eight presses done back to back and gaps off the mini wallride by Jarad Hadi. First place in the Women’s division went to Windell’s coach and pro ‘boarder Molly Aguirre who was gapping back 270 to boardslide on the flat down box. Third place in Men’s Pro went to a young digger at Windell’s, Christer Ralles who came out of the woodwork with a slew of moves, most noteably a hardway back 270’s onto the down rail. SLC’s Bode Merrill rode with machine like consistency and landed in second place, but after surviving a lethal toe edge scorpion that would have taken a weaker man out, it was clear before the finals had wrapped that first place in Men’s would be going to Tahoe loc’ Johnny Lazz, who was nailing all kinds of crazy combos one after another.
It was hot as the blazes on the hill, but by the time we’d arrived down the hill at BOB, temps were upwards of 100 degrees, it was a harsh reality for sure. But Stamps, Java and I found a shady spot to spectate from, and the only thing hotter than the temps was the hesh sesh unfolding before our sweaty eyes … well eyes don’t sweat, but it was really sweaty around our eyes. Prior to showing up to the contest I’d been hearing a lot about this kid Willis from Portland from ex-Grenade filmer Silent Greg. Greg painted a pretty good picture ‘cause Willis is truly the real deal, I’m not sure if I’ve ever seen anyone skate with that kind of board control, at least not in recent memory. Anyway Willis kills it and landed in second place, I might have landed him in first but I’m not a judger and life’s not all about podiums anyway. There was so much going on during the skate contest it was hard to catch it all, and in all reality I wasn’t familiar with all the dudes so I can’t really give you a good play by play. Not to take anything away from the guys that came in first or third, cause they f—king slayed it as did everyone in the pro division, but this guy they were calling Man Child or something didn’t get a spot on the podium and he was putting it down big time.
In the end it was a long hot day, but a really good one. I’d have to say for a contest put on by a snowboard company the skateboarding was insane, maybe it’s just because I go to too many snowboard contests, but level of the skating seemed to blow the snowboarding out of the water which is magnified by the fact that they were shredding indoors with a temperature of 102 degrees.
Big thanks to Rian, Java, Amy, Brad, Tyrese [Travis] and everyone at Bonfire and Windell’s for having us up there and for putting together a rad day of shredding, you guys kill it.
