2004 DTR - Mountain High, CA
01/24/04 - By Nate Deschenes
How high? Mountain High. What a way to kick off the tour! With the RV fresh off its new orange tattoo our ambassador to the resort, Chuck Allen, secured us a most prime location: 10 feet from the snow, 20 feet from the can. Having not been to Mtn. High in almost 10 years I was not aware today would be sold out. I guess this is the norm for a Saturday this time of year at California's third most visited resort. After today's experience, I can see why: minutes from LA, cheap lift tickets, a super fun park, and a most efficient staff of employees, how could you resist some slippin' and slidin' and slashin'? All of which can be done on any one of the area's strategically placed jumps, balance bars, or rad boxes. And upon witnessing my partner, the manic Hispanic Lucky Lopez spin to win on what can only be described as a buried trash can lid on a spine of snow, I can assure you this place has something for everyone.
Speaking of something for everyone, that may be the best way to describe what happened later that afternoon. As if the SNOWBOARDER orange on the RV was not enough to disrupt satellite signals from their destinations, Lucky's work behind the bullhorn had the kids on us like ants on a dead lizard. It was great, DVD's, posters and T-shirts were flying in all directions. I have never seen anything like it, anyone within earshot was soon executing serious investigation. By this I mean ravaging our scene without remorse. It is safe to say Mtn. High will not soon forget SNOWBOARDER Magazine, that's for sure.
Did I mention it snowed? Could this be an omen?
